These statues commemorate the Great Famine of the mid 19th century. During the famine approximately 1 million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, causing the island's population to fall by between 20% and 25%.

One of the most famous landmarks in the area is Bray Head. With the Big and Little Sugarloaf it forms a chain of quartzite mountains on the north-east coast of our county. Today you can find people walking along its cliff walk , playing golf at its base or climbing to the Cross at its summit.
